The Renaissance Faire is on the move, and Lulu and Dex are along for the ride, in the next utterly charming rom-com from Jen DeLuca.Ī high-powered attorney from a success-oriented family, Louisa “Lulu” Malone lives to work, and everything seems to be going right, until the day she realizes it’s all wrong. Today’s review is the fourth installment in Jen Deluca‘s fantastic ren faire romance series, Well Traveled! I’ve recently decided to shorten those reviews and get straight to the point – what is this book about, who wrote it, where you can find and a short review on what I loved, liked and maybe thought could be better. Welcome to the Short N’ Sweet Book Review! For the ten years that I’ve been reviewing books on this blog, I’ve written long, wordy reviews that, let’s be honest, not a lot of people are probably reading.

It's why she's dedicated her life to creating a technology that will let us preserve our most precious memories. That's what neuroscientist Helena Smith believes. That's what NYC cop Barry Sutton is learning, as he investigates the devastating phenomenon the media has dubbed False Memory Syndrome - a mysterious affliction that drives its victims mad with memories of a life they never lived. This had all the familiar elements of the original tale from Cinderella, with the stepsisters (though there is a bit of twist with that one), helpers, a Prince and a stepmother. I had no idea this book was centred around a plague and it felt very surreal. Honestly, this hit differently reading it in 2022 than it would’ve done when it was first released, I’m sure. The main character, Cinder, is part-cyborg (or just cyborg? Can one be part-cyborg?) and this is all about a plague outbreak in the ‘Commonwealth’ where they’re using cyborgs as test subjects for the antidote. My favourite thing about this was that it’s a cyberpunk retelling of the classic fairytale which is so much fun. This has to be one of the most popular YA fantasy/sci-fi books out there at the moment and I can’t believe it’s taken me this long! I’m so excited that afters years of this languishing on my bookshelf, I’ve finally read it. Regarding security, “we are working with brand new voting equipment and 100% paper ballots, which is the gold standard in election security,” Kaczmarek said. “Also voters are concerned about accessibility and the election process.” “We are trying to overcome that and there is such a steady drum beat of misinformation,” she said. Regarding security, Kaczmarek said “voters hear a lot of misinformation and some voters believe that.” We are the first and only county to offer voting anywhere on Election Day.” “I feel DuPage County is a model for the state of Illinois in terms of accessibility. “Nationwide as well as here in the county, voters are concerned about accessibility because so many other states are putting up obstacles,” Kaczmarek said. (Jean Kaczmarek / HANDOUT)ĭemocrat Kaczmarek, 65, a Glen Ellyn resident, said her top issues are “accessibility to voting, election security and (correcting) misinformation regarding the rhetoric out there about election lies.” Incumbent DuPage County Clerk Jean Kaczmarek, a Democrat, is running for a second term in the Nov. These amphibians, they act in complicated ways to each other, but the friendship is the only thing standing between them and despair.”Īcknowledging the fact that adults and kids feel with the same passion and intensity, even if they read on different levels, is central to both the composition and reception of Lobel’s books. “And it’s a happy ending because they’re together. “Faced with the prospect of being alone for a month or committing an act of deception, he deceives his best friend,” Barnett explains. Frog pleads, “But Toad, I will be lonely until then.” Instead of resigning himself to isolation, Frog sneaks back into Toad’s house, rips a handful of pages out of the calendar, wakes Toad back up, and tricks him into believing a month has passed. He tells Frog to return in a month and hops back to sleep. It is the first day of spring, and Frog is eager for a celebratory post-hibernation reunion. Though the book series by Arnold Lobel has filled young readers with a sense of warmth and closeness for five decades, Frog and Toad opens with disappointment and desperation. Barnett, a prolific children’s book author whose work includes Sam and Dave Dig a Hole, is right about that. “The very first thing is sad,” marvels Mac Barnett about the opening story in Frog and Toad Are Friends. He asks a lot of personal questions and tries to get any clue he can. Detective Rasbach gets the case and at first, suspects the parents. They check as planned, and when they finally return home, they find the front door open and their baby kidnapped. They decided they will check on her every half an hour. The novel was also adapted for the theatre by Rona Munro as a one-woman show, with an acclaimed 2018 London production starting Laura Linney which transferred to New York in January 2020. My Name is Lucy Barton is a 2016 New York Times bestselling novel and the fifth novel by the American writer Elizabeth Strout. I would recommend starting with something classic like Sister Outsider: Essays and Speeches, then following up with this to get a handle on those concepts in the context of modern issues.Īn engaging essay collection that I would recommend to those who want to learn more about intersectional feminism. I agree with almost everything she says, but I also found myself zoning out because I already know the issues and statistics so well, and I wasn't really the target audience for this book.Īlthough the writing was clumsy and repetitive at times, I think this could be a great resource for white women looking to learn how to be better allies, particularly to people of color. Kendall makes the argument that all these needs are feminist causes that need addressing, especially in poor communities/hoods where survival is paramount. I'm a black feminist, and most of this book is focused on educating white feminists on issues they may not typically consider feminist or associate with the feminist movement - such as housing, food, and education. The reasons for that, however, are mostly personal. This was a good book, but I had trouble finishing it.
